Pre-marathon Spaghetti Banquet
5:00 PM
Havre Eagles Club
Description:
A spaghetti banquet, intended as a carbo-loading feast the night before the Bear Paw Marathon and accompanying runs, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2022, at the Eagles Club in Havre. Carbohydrate-loading has been found to provide runners with additional race-day energy and hydration. To maximize the carbos' benefits, runners should substantially reduce their carbohydrate intake for the better part of the week preceding the meal. The banquet will feature three area distance runners whose names remain listed among the fastest in the world in their specialties. The names of Havre High School graduates Deborah Raunig, Class of '73, and Tom Raunig, Class of '77, can still be found listed at several distances from the 10K to the marathon at the worldathletics.org website. The trailblazers were the first brother and sister to qualify for the U.S. Olympic trials 10,000 meters and marathon in the same year -- 1984, and remain by far the most accomplished of the four brother/sister pairs to do so. Deborah went on to become the fifth-fastest American woman marathoner in 1986 and entering the '88 Olympic trials ranked No. 1. She also qualified for the trials in 1992 and '96. Tom went on to be an NCAA Division I head cross country and head track and field coach. Likewise, enrolled Chippewa Cree member Donald "Donny" Belcourt qualified for the 1,500 and 5,000 meters U.S. Olympic trials in 1992 and '96 and remains listed among the fastest in each of those events at worldathletics.org. He was the subject of a full-page New York Times article "The search for the next Billy Mills" by Jere Longman, dated Dec. 26, 1994. The banquet will also provide a venue for runners to get to know each other and share knowledge of their chosen races, meet potential running partners, make plans to organize other area runs throughout the year and perhaps even establish a local runners club. The opportunities are endless and the carbohydrates a necessity to produce a runner's optimal performance. Proceeds will be used to cover the costs of the meal, some of the speakers' travel and accommodation expenses, and fundraising efforts of volunteer organizations which pledge to assist with the dinner. The cost of attending the banquet will be established later. Additional fund-raising efforts may be included in the evening's activities.
