Sluice Boxes State Park Hike Description:
RSVP at the link below to help us plan for parking. If weather causes cancellation, we will contact all who RSVP'ed.

Join Havre Trails for a hike through the beautiful Sluice Boxes State Park. This is a strenuous out and back hike that winds through the Sluice Boxes Canyon with stunning views of the canyon walls and Belt Creek. The trail is mostly flat with several steep sections that have very loose footing. The hike will be in full sun for the majority of the hike with scattered areas of shade.

Date: Saturday, August 6th, 2022

Meeting time/place: Meet at the Overlook Trailhead Parking Lot at Sluice Boxes State Park (located at 191 Evans Riceville Rd, Belt, MT 59412) at 10am. If traveling from Havre, make sure to leave Havre by 7:30am.

Directions from Havre and Rocky Boy (approximately 2.5 hours drive from Havre): Take Highway 87 south to Fort Benton. Take the first left turn to Fort Benton (Hwy 387), then take a left onto 13th Street to go through town and over the bridge. Shortly after crossing the bridge, take the first right onto Highway 228 heading south - this road will eventually turn into MT-331 (stay on the paved roadway!). Go through the town of Belt and turn left onto Anaconda Street just past the Harvest Moon Brewery and when the road ends, take a left onto Hwy 89. Anaconda Street is a short gravel road, and it’s easy to miss. If you miss it, just keep going and take a left when you get to the Hwy 89/87 intersection. Stay on 89/87 heading south until you get to Armington Junction and then take a right to stay on Hwy 89. Take 89 all the way to Sluice Boxes State Park, turning right onto Evans Riceville Rd. Once on Evans Riceville Rd, you will cross the bridge and pass the lower parking area on your left (there is a pit toilet here if you need to use the restroom before beginning the hike) and continue up Evans Riceville Rd to get to the Overlook Trailhead Parking Lot also on the left.

Hike length: Approximately 7 miles round-trip (5 hours)

Terrain difficulty: Moderate to Difficult – this hike is long-distance, has some steeper hills and climbs, and the temperature will be very hot.

Hike leader: Dave Lewis (406) 390-3857

Notes: Dogs allowed (on a leash and bring waste bags). This hike is shaded intermittently. Please remember to bring plenty of sunscreen, bug spray, hats, sunglasses, hiking poles, lunch/snacks and more water than you think you need (40oz per person at a minimum)!
